Artist Statement
The timeless history and physicality of Zoar can be mildly destabilizing and stressful until you realize reasonable caution can provide security. For example, a long walking stick greatly assists balance when crossing the stream. A simple light weight pack keeps hands free and wearing shoes that give stability and traction prevent slips and falls.
Wading upstream makes it easy to remember that the American Indian name Cattaraugus refers to a unique smell. Sounds resonate. Gravity’s pull on water shapes rock.  The aquifers above open onto the faces of the cliffs and create shiny textures and forms. I see the relentless migration of the gravelly stream bed as it journeys downstream as part of a universal cycle.
Zoar is health in timeless expression. Unique green light filters through the forest rim. The voice of the Bald Eagle and the inquisitive beaver spying seem normal. The intertwining roots of the ancient trees competing in harmony provide stability.  Zoar is medicine for an artist.
